1. Schedule a Tune-up
While there are some maintenance tasks you can do, others are best left to trained professionals. Our NATE-certified technicians clean the burners and heat exchanger. 2. Clean Vent Covers
Dirty vent covers also hinder airflow. Begin by removing the cover. You may need a screwdriver for this. Use a clean microfiber cloth dipped in warm water with a few drops of dish detergent. Wipe all surfaces of the cover. Use a separate clean cloth to dry the cover.
3. Check the Flue
Furnaces burn gas to heat your home. The burning process creates poisonous carbon monoxide. A problem with the flue, such as a bird’s nest or crack, could prevent the carbon monoxide from leaving your home.
4. Replace the Air Filter
If you have a heat pump, it likely ran all summer in order to cool your home. Its air filter is probably dirty. If you have a furnace, leaving last season’s air filter in it could lower heating efficiency by 15% or more. Replace the air filter. Throughout the winter, check the filter monthly, and replace it every three months or sooner if it’s dirty.
5. Arrange for Air Duct Cleaning
If you can’t remember the last time your home’s air ducts were cleaned, it’s a good idea to schedule this now. Dust and dirt not captured by the air filter will build up in the ducts. This buildup hinders the flow of warm air into your living spaces.
